/ THE BRIEF

The brief was to redesign the kitchen and bathroom and modernise the apartment as an investment property. It’s a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom.

The budget was $50,000.

/ THE CONCEPT

The apartment is situated in Manly NSW in a part-heritage Art Deco building. It was dated, old and cramped and in much need of some love.

To come up with a concept I looked at the building’s heritage and exquisite architectural details. While it needed to be modernised, I wanted to have a nod to its architectural heritage.

The original design of the bathroom felt old, dated and cramped. To modernise it we chose a black and white theme. To have a nod to the heritage, we kept the traditional subway tiles on the walls and placed an encaustic bold patterned tile on the floor. All the fittings were matte black and we brightened up the paint using Lexicon half. Due to the budget we were unable to pick brass fittings.

To keep within the budget I chose a simple L-shaped kitchen. This space also had to include an internal laundry. The original laundry was in the cupboard near the front door and the run off went into the shower! It was pretty awful. We made the old laundry a linen cupboard while the new laundry was put behind cabinetry near the kitchen sink.

I chose a beautiful green called Dulux Palmerin for the kitchen cabinets and paired that with matte black fittings. The green is a muted green that made the space feel calm and it also picked up on the colours of Art Deco building.

The floors were falling apart, we had rotten carpet in the bedroom too. We decided to put floating hybrid floor boards throughout the apartment in spotted gum. This really pulled the apartment together.

Before it was shown I styled it simply to give it a bit of warmth.

The apartment was rented within 3 weeks of its first showing for $580pw, $130 over the original rented price.
